Mulago National Referral Hospital has become the first public hospital in Uganda to achieve Integrated Management Systems (IMS) ISO certification, marking a major milestone in strengthening quality healthcare services in the country.

The certification confirms that the hospital now meets international standards for quality management, environmental management, and occupational health and safety, positioning it among health institutions that operate under globally recognized systems.
Health officials say the achievement is expected to boost public confidence in the national referral hospital, while improving accountability, transparency, and service delivery in the healthcare system.
The development is also expected to enhance specialized healthcare services at Mulago and attract more partnerships and collaborations within Uganda’s health sector.

While officiating at the celebrations to mark the milestone, the State Minister of Health in charge of General Duties, Anifa Kawooya Bangirana, congratulated the hospital management and staff for the achievement.
She challenged staff to remain committed and passionate about their work, noting that attaining ISO certification is only the beginning.
“Maintaining these standards will require dedication and continuous improvement to ensure customer satisfaction and quality healthcare for all Ugandans,” she said.

Mulago Hospital remains Uganda’s largest national referral and teaching hospital, playing a critical role in providing specialized medical care and training health professionals across the country.
