Kasese District – At least 34 parliamentary candidates have been duly nominated to participate in the forthcoming 2026 General Elections in Kasese District.
The two-day exercise, which started yesterday and concluded today, was conducted by the Electoral Commission at the Kasese District Multipurpose Hall.
The District Registrar, Mr. Godfrey Mbabazi, confirmed that 22 candidates were nominated on the first day, while 12 more were cleared on the final day. He noted that the process was smooth and that all individuals who turned up for nomination were attended to.
“All candidates who presented themselves were successfully processed, and we experienced no major challenges,” Mr. Mbabazi said.
Among those nominated are Hon. Gideon Thembo Mujungu for Busongora County South and Mr. Mike Asiimwe Mbakania for Busongora County North, who both chose to contest as independent candidates with NRM leanings. The duo cited dissatisfaction with the July 17 NRM primary elections, which they alleged were marred by irregularities.
“We remain loyal to the NRM, but we couldn’t ignore the unfairness witnessed in the primaries,” the candidates remarked.
Meanwhile, Hon. Godfrey Atkins Katusabe, the incumbent Bukonzo County West MP on the FDC ticket, urged voters to support leaders of integrity who would address community challenges at the national level.
Amon Philly Kahungu, contesting for Bukonzo County East on the Democratic Front (DF) ticket, pledged to focus on infrastructure development—including roads, schools, and health centers—and to invest in youth talent promotion through sports.
“Kasese has great potential among its young people. We must create opportunities through sports and education,” Mr. Kahungu said.
In her remarks, Ms. Victoria Night, an independent candidate for Kasese District Woman Member of Parliament, promised to bridge educational gaps in the district by supporting both teachers and learners.
The Rwenzori East Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, commended the candidates and the public for maintaining peace, noting that the nomination exercise ended successfully and without incident.
