Hoima City authorities have initiated an urgent investigation into alarming social media claims alleging that grasshoppers being sold within the city are poisonous. The directive comes amid rising concern among residents and traders as the grasshopper season peaks.
In a letter dated 19th November 2025, Hoima City Town Clerk Godfrey B. Kisekka instructed the City Health Officer to urgently verify the claims, warning that the circulating messages could cause unnecessary panic and negatively affect local businesses.
Kisekka emphasized that the city must “conduct a thorough investigation into these allegations to ensure public safety and prevent further spread of the claims.”
He noted that if left unverified, the allegations could mislead the public and compromise the livelihoods of many who depend on the grasshopper trade.
Speaking on the matter, David Muhumuza, the Senior Communications Officer for Hoima City, confirmed that the city has indeed received reports concerning the issue. He stated that the health department is already taking action to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
Muhumuza further urged harvesters and traders to maintain proper hygiene and careful handling of grasshoppers before bringing them to the market. He called for close cooperation between harvesters and the health teams during the ongoing investigations.
City authorities have reassured the public that investigations will be conducted thoroughly, and appropriate measures will be taken once the findings are released.
Copies of the directive have been shared with key city leaders, including the RCC, CISO, deputy and assistant RCCs, as well as the mayors of Hoima City, Hoima East, and Hoima West Divisions.
Residents are encouraged to remain calm as the city works to establish the truth behind the viral claims.
