The Judicial Training Institute (JTI), in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force, has held a two-day training focused on enhancing the capacity of judicial officers and investigators in Criminal Trial Procedures, with a special emphasis on the application of forensic science in criminal adjudication.
During the training, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sylvia Chelangat, the Principal Document Examiner with the Uganda Police Force, delivered an engaging presentation on the role of forensic document evidence in the criminal justice process.
She highlighted critical aspects of forensic work, including document analysis, comparison, evaluation, verification, and the broader framework for forensic investigations. SSP Chelangat also underscored the significance of maintaining a proper chain of custody for exhibits and the importance of pretrial conferencing with state attorneys prior to expert testimony.
Participants were also guided through the scientific examination processes used by the Forensic Services Directorate to analyze and verify questioned documents in the laboratory.
SSP Chelangat, who holds the distinction of being Uganda’s first female document examiner, brings over 18 years of professional experience to her role, inspiring a new generation of forensic experts in the country.
