The Government Chief Whip and National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Denis Hamson Obua has lost the Ajuri County parliamentary seat to Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) flag bearer Jalameso Fred, marking a major political upset in the constituency.
Final results from the election show that Jalameso secured 16,336 votes, narrowly defeating the incumbent Obua, who garnered 15,568 votes.
The outcome follows a repeat election held on Tuesday in 17 polling stations in Awei Sub-county and one polling station in Abako Sub-county, after irregularities were reported in the earlier polls. These results were combined with those from 160 polling stations that participated in the January 15 general elections.
Announcing the final tally, Michael Olobo, the Ajuri County Returning Officer, officially declared Jalameso Fred the duly elected Member of Parliament for Ajuri County.
Obua, a senior figure in government, first entered Parliament in 2006 as a representative of the Northern Uganda Youth constituency. He later became the pioneer MP for Ajuri County when the constituency was created in 2011, a seat he has held for more than a decade until this defeat.
Jalameso’s victory represents a significant gain for UPC and signals shifting political dynamics in Ajuri County, while the loss is a notable setback for the ruling NRM, given Obua’s prominence as Government Chief Whip.
The closely contested race underscores growing competitiveness in the constituency, with voters delivering a tight verdict after the combined general and repeat election results.
