Tororo, Uganda — Significant progress has been registered on the Tororo–Gulu Railway Restoration Project, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at revitalizing northern Uganda’s transport and trade corridor.
According to the latest update from the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Tororo–Kumi section, covering 113 kilometers, has been fully completed, marking a major milestone in the ongoing rehabilitation of the historic metre-gauge line.
Work is now advancing on the remaining section from Kumi to Gulu, where the railway formation has been fully prepared for track laying. The progress signals that physical construction is entering its final stages as engineers prepare to reconnect eastern and northern Uganda by rail.
At Awoja Swamp, one of the most technically challenging parts of the project, engineers have successfully installed box culverts and restored natural water flow, ensuring both environmental protection and structural stability for the railway.
Once completed, the Tororo–Gulu Railway will play a critical role in enhancing freight and passenger transport between the eastern and northern regions, reducing road congestion, and lowering transport costs for traders and industries. The line also forms a vital link to regional markets through the Northern Corridor and supports Uganda’s broader goal of reviving the railway sub-sector to boost the economy.
Officials note that the restoration works are being implemented under the supervision of the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) with support from the government and development partners.
The completion of the project is expected to revive rail connectivity to Gulu, stimulate economic activity, and enhance logistics efficiency for goods moving to and from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
