Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has unveiled the FUFA Academies League, a new youth competition designed to strengthen grassroots football and nurture the next generation of Ugandan football stars.
The league, which will officially kick off on 22nd March 2026, forms part of the FIFA Talent Development Scheme, an initiative aimed at improving youth football structures and identifying promising players at an early stage.
Developing Young Talent
The FUFA Academies League targets Grade 2 and Grade 3 academies, featuring players born between 2011 and 2012. The competition will focus on technical skill development, structured competition and talent progression, helping young players move through Uganda’s football development pathway.
The initiative is also aligned with FUFA’s Technical Master Plan, which is supported by FIFA and incorporates the Talent Identification Framework. Through this system, scouts and coaches will be able to identify and nurture young footballers from across the country.
Pilot Competition in Kampala and Buganda
The 2026 edition will serve as a pilot competition for academies in the Kampala and Buganda regions. Only Grade 2 and Grade 3 academies that meet the required competition standards will take part in the inaugural season.
To support the teams ahead of the tournament, participating academies have each received 10 Zakayo footballs to facilitate training and match preparation before the competition begins.
Symbolic League Identity
The FUFA Academies League logo reflects the spirit of youth football development. The design features a youthful figure in teal reaching for a football coloured in the Ugandan flag, symbolising energy, growth and the aspirations of young players across the country.
The league’s slogan, “Greatness Starts Now,” highlights its mission of developing talent at an early age and inspiring young players to pursue their football dreams.
With vibrant colours and a playful design, the logo represents youth, inclusivity and creativity, values that FUFA hopes will define the new competition.
As the kickoff date approaches, the FUFA Academies League is expected to become an important platform for discovering and developing Uganda’s future football stars while strengthening the foundation of the sport nationwide.
